I know many of you all want the Sr20det swap, but if I didnt need to go that fast and merely just wanted a better non-turbo engine, would an Sr20de (ouf of a silvia) be a good choice? I"m not too keen on the idea of a turbo, whichi s why i thought of this. Would Sr20de's be expensive from japan?

You would probably pay more for shipping than for the actual engine. Also, imho, it would be kind of a waste of time. The SR20DE in various forms puts out between 165~200ps. Not really a significant increase over the KA24DE, especially considering the time you are going to spend installing it, and how much more difficult (compared to DET) it will be to tune it.

the only advantage of going would an N/A sr20DE would be if you found a good engine out of a s14Q's. these engines are variable valve timing and put out about the same peak HP as a red top SR20DET. only problem is, finding one of these ngines, it'll cost just as much or more than that red top sr20det, make less torque, and tuning isnt as simple, as with the red top sr20det its just a matter of turning up the boost until you need a new turbo and intercooler. taking an SR20DE into the 300hp range without going to turbo would be extremely difficult, let alone trying to keep it streetable. really any ways you look at it, if you're going to swap go with the SR, or even the CA, before you get an N/A sr20DE. having an N/A sr20DE would just be like having a torquier honda VTEC motor, which is just...not as cool as having a nissan turbo monster.

I dunno. . like he said, not interested in having a turbo and a bunch of power.. so with that being said, I think the SR20DE is an awesome choice. . I much prefer the drivability of that engine compared to the KA... I don't have fun with my engine over 5k RPM. . Also, if you want to turbo it later... you can slap the turbo parts on it from a Silvia... a friend did this for his Sentra (parts were from a U13 Bluebird) and made his stock SR20DE a DET. . However, it's not truly an SR20DET... but for around 1000 - 2000 bucks, you can have turbo...

Now like most n/a engines with a turbo version the n/a sr20de has higher compression pistons then it's turbo counter part, not to mention other "little things" that i'm sure i'm missing so it's not as simple as "adding" a turbo. As for your friend with the sentra, he might have added the turbo parts but he can't boost as high as a regular sr20det because he has the n/a high compression pistons. |
