Intake Q's
I recently found out one of my friends has access to a pipe bending machine. The first thing i thought was to make an intake. I popped my hood and realized there was a little more to do then bend a pipe.
Starting on the drivers side, a hose goes off the air box into another black box and then to a metal thing and then the header. What is all this? Do i need it? Im guessing it has something to do with emmissions. Next, on the passenger side there are two tubes coming of the side of the intake tube before it goes into the ribbed tube before the manifold. I cant seem to find out where these go or what they do. Also what kind of pipeing is reccomended. Meaning wall thickness and material. I have a s13 kade. pics comming soon Last edited by RacerBoi; 02-24-2003 at 04:15 PM.. |

I'll be the first to help you, but.. I can't.
I can't understand what you are talking about, or see changes in thoughts based on new paragraphs. It's really hard to follow. My suggestion: Take pictures of what you are talking about, and circle them in paint or photoshop. After that, you'll get your answers. Oh yea, what are you working on? SOHC, DOHC, s13, s14? Each will have different stuff going into and out of the piping. -Jeff

Actualy, you just have to worry about getting the tube bent correctly. Then, it will have to fit on the throttle body and the MAF - ie: make sure you get the right diameter or make sure you can buy/make some sort of fitting.
For the hoses, you'll need to make some holes on your piping. And for each hole, weld a small metal tube on which the hose will attach. Thickness? Anything between 2 to 5 mm should be perfect. The idea is to keep it light and relatively solid. You don't need any special material. The intake is just a sort of vacuum, so there's no extreme pressure or anything going on in there. |

if you planning on doing crush bends.. i would just keep it stock..
the creases in the bends would restrict air flow. if you have a machine that can do mandrel bends.. [ is there one? ] then thats a different story. |

I just recently put a intake on my 92' 240 sx. Just take the stock plastic intake tube off and follow the bends. I had a guy at a muffler shop bend mine and it worked out great. They were crush bends but are'nt very restrictive at all. I put the nipple in myself but the pipe cost me $25.00. 2.5 in pipe works pretty well. I painted mine, looks just like the AEM without special fittings and ofcourse the logo.
