Pilot Bearing pulling tool question - Zilvia.net Forums | Nissan 240SX (Silvia) and Z (Fairlady) Car Forum

Hello.

This weekend I am going doing a manual tranny swap, and went to the parts store to rent (loan for free) a slide hammer and pilot bearing pulling tool. However, the pilot bearing pulling tool that I have is too large to fit into the replacement pilot bushing. I know that I won't be using this with this bushing, but was checking it out as a guide to see what the difference would be with the bearing and bushing.

I guess my question is this - do i need to worry about the fact that the bearing pulling tool won't slide into the new pilot bushing or will I need a different bearing pulling tool? The only way this tool will work is if the bearing has a larger inner diameter than the bushing, which I find unlikely. Any help would be appreicated.

Usually, I just drill the automatic bearing on 2 opposite side and collapse it on its own. Just be careful not to drill too deep and damage the crank. Grease up the pilot bearing tap it in gently with an extension and rubber mallet.

packing the hole with grease and pressing a smaller
OD rod has been the best method by far

yea i heard that hydraulic press like

fill in with a lot of grease and keep tapping it with 11mm socket i think

i never had success with this i guess i just dont know how to do it but most mechanic told me that it can be done.

I took mine to local transmission shop and they had it done in 5 minutes and did it for free.

I use a pipe wrench, just start turning on it and it'll work it's way out in less than 5 minutes.

I took a hammper and chizzile and knocked that shyt out when I did my swap since I broke the pilot remover tool

thanks for the pointers everyone. I will try the bearing tool, and if it doesn't work than i may just break out the drill/hammer/vice-grips/cutting torch or whatever else it takes to get it out. I like the idea of packing it with grease then pushing through the middle to push it out, seems like it would work pretty well.

here is the process:

step 1. buy some wonder bread

step 2. insert wonder bread in hole

step 3. put in a socket or metal rod that just fits in

step4. repeat step 2 until the bearing comes out.

this way the clean up is easier and faster then grease. all you need to do is pick the piece of compressed wonder bread out of the crank

PS... you can use any white bread. doesnt have to be a name brand "wonder bread"

go to auto zone and get ur self a blind hole puller ill take you about a min to take it off ive done it couple times works good ,dont waist ur time with the pilot bearing puller or anything else save your self a lot of trouble

wow man just hit up autozone tell them what car you have and they need to give you the right puller. i just did this this past weekend and it took one pull of the slide hammer and it came right out fuck drilling that bitch out

thats basically what i did, told them i was needing the puller to pull the bearing out and they gave me this -

along with a slide hammer.

Problem is, on the bushing at least, the teeth are just a bit too wide to fit. I'm hoping I don't have the same problem with the bearing.

that shit doesnt work. my boss has that one for doing VW engines and it works.

doesnt fit a nissan though.

ok, so tried the grease method - didn't work. Tried the puller - broke it. Ended up drilling it out and then taking a hammer and chisel. Surprisingly, had I tried this way first, it would have taken much much less time. I tried the grease method for an over and hour, and used everything from a 8 lb sledge to an impact hammer to try and get it out. The pullers broke after a dozen attempts. The drill/chisel method took maybe 15 mins.

Yes, it doesn't fit in nissan's pilot bushing perfectly. It it is like 2mm or less to fit in the diameter, but I managed to fit it in no problem with a hammer. Then just pull with your favorite method. It took me 10 mins to take mine out.

I just took mine out with this. Same puller i rent from autozone. it took me 5 mins to take mine out ,,,,,^^^^^and 3 mins to put in the bronze ring...

Easily the shittiest part of the entire swap for me. Broke the autozone bearing puller and grease method didn't work out. Ended up dremel/screwdriver/hammering that bitch out

grease method is messy and has never worked for me.

same with all the pullers i have tried. always slipped.

the only method that worked was getting a dremel with a tungsten carbide bit piece.
(it cost $20 and the guy at OSH told me tungsten carbide is the 2nd strongest thing next to diamond and would cut through anything except a diamond)

Proceeded with dremeling one side/wall of the pilot bearing till it got weak enough that i could break it apart with a flathead and chiesel. then i forced the pilot bearing to collapse on itself and got it out. only drawback to this method is that it takes a while and little metal shards get all over your shirt making you itchy as fuck.

use the slide hammer itself. put the threaded side in and hold it at an angle. then slide hammer it out using the threads to grip the bearing. dont tell autozone how you used the loaner tool haha

Blind Hole puller from Autozone works..
I have used the grease and bread method, I say fuck those methods. Get the blind hole puller from A.Z. It is fucking free.. You go.. buy the tool, use it for MAYBE a minute, take it back, and get your money back. Cant go wrong..
part number there is 27128 i believe.. Its like $106 deposit ya gotta leave with them.

My japanese buddies said that they use a grease gun with a fat tip and shove it over the front of the pilot bearing and start pumping and the pressure/vacuum exerted pushes the bearing out.
