Over heated while in traffic.

Hey i have a KA24DE on my s13.

i was sitting in traffic on the 91 east last night and my temps shot up and my car overheated while i tried to move over to the shoulder. It's currently sitting at a shop, and the mechanic doesnt come back in untill monday. when i popped the hood, coolant was shooting everywhere. and it looked like it was coming out of the radiator area because the radiator hose was smoking like crazy. earlier that day, i noticed my check engine light would come on at around 80mph and then turn off as i decreased speed. Does anyone have an idea of what it might be? i'm thinking either my head gasket or radiator hose blew. i really just want to get an idea on how much i might be spending. any input would help thanks.

first off. try to find out where the leak is, your thermostat may have gotten stuck, cracked radiator, or a hose may have just blew, the list goes on.

Because, it blew on my way home from MrOneShotKill's house. I was in long beach to pick up his intake, i called tripple a to get it towed. i was 48 miles from home, i'm only covered 7 miles. and each mile is 10 dollars charge. so my car is sitting at the shop in anaheim, the money i would pay to get it down to my home can get it fixed at this shop. If it was here then sure, i'm just trying to get an idea of how much this kind of work is gonna cost a shop to do.

^^^ That obviously depends on what the problem is. Most likely you have a leak from the hose or radiator, which you'd replace then see how it is. Could be $100, or could be $500, depending on what needs to be replaced and how much time it takes.

Most likely your engine is fine if you shut it off as soon as the temps shot up.

Okay i just got the call from the shop, I blew a head gasket, blew the thermostat, blew two thermostat hoses and blew the thermostat housing gasket. They want to charge me $1200 for parts and labor. Does that seem right?

I really don't have that kind of money right now..

Is this the first time it overheated..? Because from what you describe it sounds like you've had an ongoing overheating issue. Blown Head Gasket..? Hmmm.. I'm pretty sure it takes more than a few minutes for your Head Gasket to blow and again from what you described its sounds like a volcano erupted under your hood vs. a little overheating from sitting in traffic. Especially for all those other cooling pieces to go out as well. (Hoses, Therm. Etc.)

I think a second opinion is needed. I could be wrong thogh seeing as how I havent even seen the car.
