The 97-98 headlights are sweet.. but making them fit onto the front of the 96 240 will prolly cost you more than just swapping the front (i assume.......... mebbe i'm wrong)
Nguyen on the board swapped the entire front of his 95 wif a 97-98 front :

he put a thread on the forum about his front...

have you looked into this HID system by VISION?  I know of a few people that has installed it into their cars and it looks AWESOME....

http://www.dawoodk.com/wkhid/index.html

it is by far one of the most affordable "REAL" HID systems on the market today..

this system costs around $440-$580 US depending on applications.

but don't get fooled by imitations.. ONLY get this VISION brand.  I got screwed over by an imitation which did not funtion very well..  i'm actually in the process of getting my money back from this imitation kit, then i'm going to get a VISION one too.

oh, also, i can post a few sources that this kit can be purchased from in the states if anyone is interested.. since i'm from Canada, I usually try to buy from Canadian distributors only.. to save customs charges.
