My Project turned into a lost hope
So... i have a 92 240sx... got it going and hopin i would drive it on the track some day.. long story short, i blew up the SOHC KA24E from boosting alittle to high.now i have arais pistons eagle rods all there performance parts waiting to be installed the only machine shop i know of is telling me it could cost 300 to hone it( possibly bore it ) because the piston rings are slightly too big to fit in the cyl... so they names alotta shit and how much its gonna cost.. my question....... what does everyone do with there KA24e ?!!! i just want another one to drop in my car so i can drive her !! i think i might have 1200 worked up soon.. what do i do ?!?!!!!

Most people go KA24DE if I remember correctly.
Will those parts work on a DOHC motor? If so, upgrade, down the boost a little and have fun. Granted, SOCH has more meat on it's walls I believe so you could boost it more, eh.

Just do what Zugoi said. If its just the piston rings, you just need to order smaller ones. shouldnt be very expensive at all. however, if the cylinder wall was damaged, then you'll need to bore and hone it to fix the damage. did they say anything about damaged walls, or anything besides piston rings being too big?

how would the machine shop know if the rings are too big without boring and honing to arias' specifications? unless the rings are labeled for some a bigger bore they really couldn't. arias pistons tend to run a fair large piston to wall clearance so maybe that's why it might seem to them that the rings are too big. also you are supposed to grind the rings for the correct ring gap, as long as they are the correct rings (which should have came w/ the pistons)

fakts13 is on the money on this.....
First 300 is way to much for what there going to do. Get the specs that came with the pistons if you did not get them call the company and ask for the recommended specs. They need to measure each pistons thats going in to each cylinder and # for example cylinder 1 and pistons 1 go here and ect... Go find a different machine shop. |

He's worried about the cost of rebuilding his KA...2JZ maybe out of his budget.

There is 2 options here A) you miss understanding your machine shop B)You need a new machine shop cuz they suck. What size pistons did you get? stock is 86. If you got 86.5 then bore it to 86.5 if you got 87 then bore to 87. Also your machine shop needs the clearance specs of cylinder wall to skirt clearance, Then measure the piston and bore the walls to that including the clearance specs. The rings should have come with pistons. They need to be gaped just like spark plugs do, If the gap is too small, you need to use a ring grinder/filer and gap them to the right specs.
