Changing diff fluid faster way through breather

As I was installing a new LSD for my friend last night I thought of a faster way to fill up the diff. Remove the vent hole and put a hose over it with a hose clamp, run the line through the trunk by drilling a hole, apply some sealer to prevent water going into the trunk. Now you can just get a bottle and fill from top.
The breather hole is kinda small so it's not the fastest process yet, but when I do mine I plan on drilling the hole to 3/8in and attaching a barb fitting.

The hose always just stays in the trunk, it needs to stay open to vent. I gotta come up with something to put on the hose so it can vent but dirt don't fall inside.

My friend delivers food for work, I wonder how the customers will like their food.
Chinese food with some NISMO LSD fluid. mmmm yum yum.
I will find out when he is done with work tonight how the car smells, I was thinking about that also. I can make the hose loop back outside if the smell is bad.

I'm not a rocket scientist but how exactly are you gonna force thick ass fluid to flow into something so small? To make it better, you're trying to force it into the vent hole. I'm that great with physics but you try to pump something into a space that has air in it, air has to go out some how...

What you should have done is just dumped 2 qts into it BEFORE you put the diff in.

im not trying to flame, but im a little bit confused... do 240's not already have a fill plug on the diff? every diff ive ever worked on has had a fill plug, and it was always pretty easy to fill them up. what is so hard about using that one.

The problem is its in an awkward position. If the diff is in the car, only way to fill it is with some kind of pump.

Oh, i see what you are saying. Yea, if you dont have that little pump it can be hard. I bought mine from kragen for like 12 bucks though and i do enough diff and tranny work to justify having it. Id still rather spend the 12 bucks and use it once than drill a hole in my trunk though. that still seams a bit more practical.

Yup, pumping fluid in only takes like 5 minutes for almost 2 quarts.

good idea for the op but not practical. sooo much easier just buying a pump and doing it the right way. not knocking the idea though if someone needs it done and don't have a pump and doesn't feel like dropping the diff to fill it then ya it'll work but i'd rather buy some kind of plug to go over the original fill hole and keep the vent open as intended.

point of this is to show everyone that nearly for free without any hard fabrication you can have an easy way to fill up your diff. You could also do this while it's on the car I'm sure.
Diffs with clutch type LSD will need often fluid changed, I don't wanna deal with no extension hoses/ pumps to get the fluid in when I can just pour it in from top like engine oil.
Yes the breather is small, but like I was saying I just did this for free for my friend, if I had a fitting with me in my garage I would have drilled it for him and tapped it. I will buy couple of fittings next time I'm at the hardware store so I can be prepared if someone wants this service.
Since the breather hole is so small, when you want to fill you put the hose over the bottles fitting, flip the bottle put a hole on other end and take a break.

there is truth to this.

possible make a y shaped hose so the air has somewhere to go.

i dunno sounds annoying cuz ur gonna be down there anyway to drain it. plus you run the possibility of overfilling it without knowing.

i like the pump and squeeze method 5 min. done. cuz it doesnt always take exactly 2 quarts

Changing the diff oil has always been a pain in the ass. And yes, gear oil does smell like absolute dogshit. I figured a way to use a compressor to make things go quicker.

The absolute easiest way to change diff fluid without modifying the diff cover is to remove the stock fuel tank and run a smaller fuel cell.

There is not much room between the stock tank and the diff cover to pour the diff fluid directly into the filler hole.

Take out factory fill plug

go buy some big clear tubeing from lowes to stick in there, and a funnel in the other. Run it through the wheel/suspension, and then stand up along side the car and fill the funnel. Let it drain through the funnel/tube.

Is a pump easier? Sure...I use our pneumatic one all the time. But I've done it this way in a driveway 100x without issue. Very easy, mess free.

At work, we just stick a piece of hose over the tip of the bottle and stick the other end in the case...squeeze bottle..fluid goes to diff...whats w/ all the funnels and stuff? The fluid is thick enough it will flow up the tube no prob. I did it all the time when I was a civilian line tech..

I can't believe you guys think it's hard to fill a diff with fluid. The factory port is wide open to stick a piece of tubing in there. Either run it up higher like codyace mentioned, or get a $5 pump from an autoparts store. It's not rocket surgery guys...

Was this a joke? lol.

The filler hole is on the side of the diff. Not the front cover.

Agreed x10. It is simple to fill the diff with a piece of hose. I can't believe the idea of running the vent tube inside the car even came up. Your car will smell absolutely horrid from now on.

Gear oil = wost smell ever.

Accessing, the fill hole on the side of the diff can be a PIA,

-Ill be trying the breather hole technique, with my "huge messy fluid pump"
once you knock that cap off the top can you replace it?

i see someone doing this mod if the car was used for offroad, so water doesn't get in the diff when crossing rivers and such. i don't see this as the easy way of doing it. it would take 2x or 3x longer to fill throw a smaller hole. better yet how do you determine if your over filling it (looking at a noobs point of view if i didn't know how much the pumkin takes.)

Hmmm.... It seems cool at a glance, but I I have to agree that's really not a practical solution. I've always just used one of the cheap pumps from the store that attatches to the bottle. Not all ideas are great, but without trying nothing cool would ever be discovered.

the ironic thing, is that people can think of a 'wacky/hard/rediculous' way to fill i, but not use commen sense too...wtf

Seriously, I just use a 2 dollar piece of hose through the wheel. 10 minutes later, to easy

I thought of this years ago.

What stopped me from doing it with AN shit and fans is the fact that it really just take 5 minutes to pump in the fluid.

Fuck it I'm not gonna fuck with Nissan engineering

another point to this would be that the breath hose doesnt sit in a straight vertical line...could you fill thru there...yes...
but the second the diff gets hot that it needs to breath, all that left over fluid in hose will either burp up in ur trunk space...or spill onto were ever ur driving...

dare i say im probably one of the laziest people here who hates working on my car, and even when i had to break in my 2way at the track, on the event day, at the event parking, i did it in like 5-10 minutes with a manual pump...

as far as the AN on the side, that would work, but you'd deffinetly have to measure out how much fluid to dump in there since ur still gonna have to anget the hose...not to mention maybe even buy more fluid to compensate for hose length...maybe minimal...

but yeah...i dont see this as a "good thing"...
