Any One Know How To Use A DB Meter ?

I got a citation for modified exhaust but i can have it written off as long as it passes the california state DB law witch is under 98. My problem is i do not know if there is a certain distance you need to be from the car. but this is with out a silencer and close up.

YouTube - Supra DB

also... it sounds really loud on the camera but when you hear it in person its not that loud. and it sounds crappy on camera too lol.

They test it like six feet or so from the back. Not sure at what RPM's though.

Really?

I was sent to the ref, I tested for exhaust which was 108 if I passed otherwise if I failed I didn't pay. I went to hondo college for my test which I believe is right off of the 605 on peck. The guy was pretty cool, the California DB limit is 95 not 98.

deng... i guess the place this lady was telling me off was a complete rip.. cuz i remember her specifically saying ( its 180 for and apointment ) its confusing cuz they way she explained it she made it seem like you pay before you even have the car inspected. she even was gonna charge me then and there and set it up but i was like no i dont have the money for that at the moment. so im gonna call back.. clear it up with them and find out if i just misunderstood.

You could go to a junk yard and get a muffler from some stock car(Q45s are ridiculously quite).

Then go to an exhaust shop and have them install it as well as making a test pipe style section for when you don't need/want it muffled.

180, wtf... Mine wasn't that much. Hell, I don't even remember paying, so it must've been less than 20 bucks. My car (89, sohc at the time) was tested from 3 feet at something around 3200 rpms. The rpm they tested at varies from car to car.

^Perhaps for an actual referee inspection, as in what they do when you get a ref ticket, or you want to get your new (legal) motor swapped approved, but NOT for a decibel test.

Even for the state ref inspection, it only costed like $25, and this was in California.

I have received at least 8 of these tickets before and all I did is print out the page on apexi website that states their exhausts are under the db limit. Also I have never had an apexi exhaust on my car. I am not sure were you are, but in san diego they don't have a db meter so maybe that's way my method works. This was taken directly from apexi's website (oh and the distance is 20in and the rpm level is 3000 to 5000 ): Hope this helps.
All A'PEXi exhaust systems comply with applicable emission laws since they neither modify nor relocate the required factory emission control devices; they are considered "direct replacement" parts. Such parts do not require a CARB Executive Order (EO) since they are not "add on" or "modified" parts. A'PEXi exhaust systems are "functionally identical" to the OEM parts during emission tests. Sound levels are tested on stock vehicles before the product release to ensure compliance with the 95dB limit.
