top speed is 11ty billion mph for ALL SR20s including DEs!
Seriously, what does it matter? Top speed is more dependant upon gearing than engine power (until you get above 140-150mph). Stock 240s are electronically limited to ~115 mph, but mechanically limited to ~155mph. I personally have done 130mph (read on Apex'i RSM, not crappy inaccurate Nissan speedo), and I felt EXTREMELY stupid afterwards, mainly because I put myself and others into danger for something as stupid as seeing just how fast I could go. (FWIW, the car had more legs, but I didn't want to push my luck.. stock KA24DE with exhaust). The only way i'd do it again is if i had a rollcage, racing seat & harness & helmet, and some sort of aero like sideskirts and wangan wing or somesuch. It'd also have to be on a track. I've lost my appetite for being stupid on public streets/highways. |

The top speed I did with the SR was 142 mph. Stupid of me, will never do it again.
just like the previous posters, I matured and I'm not about to redo any of those stunts on the street.

![]() I took my SOHC S13 when it was auto to about 125-130. When I converted to 5-speed and did some work to the car, I beleive I hit 135-140.. but there was REALLY no power at that point, and it wouldnt be able to do it all the time. Plus, it took a quite a bit of time to take the car up to ANY speed over 125.. it creeps. How do I know I hit those speeds? I have a 96-98 180SX gauge cluster in my car which has been converted to read up to 180MPH and calibrated to match. Its pretty accurate. SR.. I would imagine would be able to do 140-150 as long as the car's aerodynamics are not facked with, and as long as the car has a stable suspension, tires, brakes.. just to be safe. I dont advocate doing this on public roads, but at night there is a time and place for everything.. especially on long trips with long stretches of road. I dont LOOK to hit speeds like this, but when the car is operating well and I want to "play" I do it when safe. - Mike |

By lowering your Cd, you can reduce drag and thereby raise your drag limited top speed. This is where stuff like splitters, underbody panels, ducting, sideskirts, erc come into play. On the new Z, some come with a small spoiler and a very small front lip. It seems crazy, but those 2 things combined reduce the Cd of the car from .30 to .29. |

thats why the ca18det guys can claim higher speeds, some of them are saying they have hit 160 mph plus, and the ca18det can wind out to 9000 rpm...
Of course, with different gears (or TT 300zx rear end) all bets are off. |

'93 S13 body with S14 SR20DET, 388.7whp, 2535lbs on a scale with 1/4 tank of gas, j30 rear end, stock tranny gears, on 205/50R15 86W Kumho Ecsta XS tires on steelies...lol Sleeper look all the way!!! Yes, they are smaller in diameter than stock 205/60R15. I went with this tire because I was looking for the highest ratings in speed and traction without having to buy rims yet. Because I wanted to find out my top speed and stock H-rated 112mph tires were not safe to use for top speed runs. These tires have insane traction and super amazing cornering!!! Now I only spin the two first gears and stop spinning in 3rd. I used a GPS cause speedo only goes to 110mph and took it up to 7,000rpm's and held it there for couple seconds. Gps read out was 153mph@7000rpm. Now don't forget my tires are much smaller in diameter and I don't know how accurate the GPS is when accelerating that fast... It's not exactly a slow car...lol
My top speed at 7,000rpm is 153mph. ![]() Makes me so mad because I hit 127mph in 1/4mile at the drag strip in 4th gear! |

Stock KA @6,000rpm on 205/60R15(stock) tires is geared to go 142mph. With 195/60R15 tires =139mph.
SR20 @7200rpm on 205/60R15(stock) tires is geared to go 171mph with 4.083 final drive(stock), but if it has a J30 3.916 rear swapped in 178mph. |

what?! the '205' and '195' is the width of the tire, not the outer diameter. wouldnt make any difference. perhaps '60' vs '65' would... |

S14 SR20det 135mph chasing after a bike who tossed a can of soda at my car for accidentally cutting him off.
Stupid of me to catch him and throw it back at him, and on top of that, I blew my turbo's oil line. :\ |

If you switch tires to "205"/60R15 your top speed is 171mph. That's 4mph difference!!! may not be a lot but it makes a difference. Play with it more and you'll see more of a difference. Just to show you how much... if you put on 315/60R15 tires on. Your top speed will be 207mph! NOW THAT'S A BIG DIFFERENCE!!! (yes, you can by a 15x12rim and 315/60R15 tires) Rim = Works Meister CR01 15x12 and Tire = Hoosier D.O.T. Drag Radial 315/60R15 |

Some of you might not want to go fast, but I do!
I would love to see my car go faster than 200mph in less than 1 mile. Not some long 5-6 mile stretch. Right now my car has 390Whp on a dyno. I've done 153 or 155mph on 205/50R15 @7000rpm. Than I swapped tires to 205/60R15 and went 171mph @7200rpm and car felt stable and my body kit didn't fly off...lol that was my only concern. Put in a J30(3.916) rear end and it went 178mph @7200rpm.
My car right now has power to go faster. Man, my speedometer looks like a tachometer it moves so fast till it hits the needle...lol I feel it has way more power to go faster but my gears are not letting me. So, whoever started this thread thank you! And for all of you who don't want to push your car and see what you can do. I take it it's not for you. Where do I want to go over 200mph in my 240? Anywhere! And that's the point! I don't want to worry about having to have a long long straight away to achieve it. I want to be able to do this in a mile or so. Yes, I do sit here and compare a 11.8lbs drive shaft to 14.7lbs one. And yes, I buy the lightest possible rim and so forth with every single part I purchase. I spend hours and days researching just one part. I spent a week looking up tires to see how much tires weigh in 315/50R15 compared to 315/35R17 to see which rim and tire to go with. Yes, I weighed my steelies with and without tires to see how much a stock rim weighs to make sure my after market one is lighter. I also weighed the 89 aluminum rim(one's with little tear drop holes) and 92 aluminum rim(7 spoke I believe) to see how much they weigh compared to each other. Because I want the lightest car with durable, long lasting SR20 that does 205 or so mph and is a street legal weekend driver. Fast doesn't mean as much power as possible... Fast can be adequate power with light weight. It will handle better , require less brakes and less power to be as fast than a more powerful car. My car is nimble, agile, fast and it only has 390Whp. It is fast enough to beat a 642hp 6.2L supercharged Camaro SS at a drag strip. Yes, I weighed my car on a scale. It weighs 2535lbs (S13 body with S14 SR20 in it) |

Why? did you build the fastest top speed 240? Some of us are interested in knowing what gears we can use, what tires, rims, rear end or trans to achieve higher speeds. I don't believe there's ever an end to that. So keep this thread going. Because we are all still wrenching on our cars and comparing data to achieve faster speeds.

Mine has done 175 mph.
With the new engine and gearing it could do a bit more than 200. Who knows... Online tools and theory. Calculate HP For Speed http://craig.backfire.ca/pages/autos/drag Real life testing http://youtu.be/VQoQhDXeT_I

Just what in the actual fuck is going on here. This thread is from 2003 and is dumb as fuck.
200mph240sx, you suck dude. First you bump an uber dead old-ass thread in 2012 because you apparently can't drive in anything other than a straight line. Then it takes you a fucking year to respond and again bump a dead thread. ![]() Go buy a Supra and move to Texas. The rednecks there love standing mile races and that's pretty much all a Supra is good for. |

Stop hating on people who want to see how fast they can go in a 240sx. Who cares how old this thread is. It is actually very informative. Anyone who wants to get rid off governer on their car now can read and see what their top speed could be with current gears. Or use posted info to calculate how much power they will need to achieve their goals. So, why are you all upset about it idk. I'm not bashing you for only wanting to drift or whatever you do in your 240. So, stop complaining about an old thread that is useful. |

I really would like to find out how fast the fastest 240sx with an SR20DET is. There was one with SR20 on Bonneville Flats that went 186mph, but that's slow. And one with Aurora Indy V8 engine went 235mph. Now that's better, but it wasn't SR20. |
