Got a computer problem

Problematic computer:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (1.5GHz), DFI AD73 pro motherboard, 512mb ddr, 40gb hdd. It came with an ATI Rage 128 16mb graphics card, which was choppy on the lowest CS settings, and my computer would occasionally freeze while playing. So I upgraded to an ATI Radeon 9200, 128mb g-card. Now, the freezing happens while web surfing, typing papers, and playing CS. I've downloaded the latest drivers for the card, for the motherboard, and even flashed the BIOS with the most updated version. The fucker just won't run. So I'm thinking I have a hardware conflict somewhere, but Windows system management isn't bitching.
Does anyone have a clue on my problem?
-Jeff

Possible IRQ conflict. Goto File manager-->System Info-->Hardware Resources-->IRQ's and see what devices are on the same IRQ. Assuming that it does share its IRQ start yanking out those devices (probably start with the sound card)

[Dudewhere'smycar] And then? [/dude]
So if there is an IRQ conflict, I can't reassign? I think that computer (my girlfriend's) has an integrated sound. If I do yank the card (if that's the conflict) then what? Where do I relocate it to?

I guess I could have done that before posting *shrug*.
Anyway, IRQ 5 has 2:
(PCI)Avance AC'97 audio for VIA audio Controller
(PCI)CNet PRO2000 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
IRQ 11 has 3, including the video card:
(PCI)Radeon 9200 [Shouldn't this be AGP??]
(PCI)VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
(PCI)VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller [yes, again]

Any help here? I could move the Ethernet card to an open PCI slot, the Radeon is in an AGP slot, dunno why it's saying PCI, and I don't know why I have 2 USB controllers going on, but that's integrated I believe. If someone gives me a reason and/or what to look for, I'll open the case.

You can change IRQ's in the bios. I would try moving the USB stuff off of IRQ 11 and see what happens (i thought for sure it would be the sound card on the same IRQ but thats not the case)

EDIT: Having more then one device on an IRQ is ok (hell I have 9 devices on the same IRQ as my vid card) But IRQ problems with vid cards are common, so it maybe your problem. Also avoid using the PCI slot closest to the AGP slot they have to share the same IRQ alot of the time.

Thanks for the worthless post. I'll be sure to delete it.
My AGP graphics card is still showing up as (PCI), and I moved the audio with the g-card and the USB with the Ethernet card. Now my mouse/keyboard lock up at inopportune times, even though they are not USB, and have their own IRQ *sigh*

There's no such thing as an IRQ conflict in windows 2000 or XP because they use a hardware abstraction layer.

Random freezing problems are pretty much impossible to diagnose if they aren't consistant. It could be a million different things, a bad driver that doesnt work well with something else in your system, or even something as weird as bad power from the power supply.

Things I would try though would be to get the newest drivers for the Via chipset, the video card and sound card off the company's websites. Also you could try disabling devices like the sound, one at a time and see if it doesn't jam without that driver loaded.
