Redrilling Wheels

Ok, so I was flipping my sign today and I was thinking about 5x114.3 wheels and how cool they usually are. Then the thought crossed my mind, what if you could re-drill a wheel? Well... can you? I know how a wheel is subjected to much stress, but there are plenty of dual-pattern wheels out there. I'm guessing it would depend on the thickness of the mating surface and general strength of the wheel's material. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

I don't see why you can't drill certian wheels yourself, Tirerack offers drilled K1's for example. It's not something I would take lightly though, most wheels today are designed as light as they can be and removing material can have many unforseen consequences.

There are plenty of decent race shops that could give you their opinion on this subject- I honestly think this question can only be properly answered by someone with years and years of experince dealing with wheels.

TireRack drills their K1s from blanks, and more than likely wouldn't do multiple patterns on the same wheel.
Also, a lot of wheels have weird "decoration holes" in between the actual bolt holes, which may interfere with the pattern you're trying to drill. Other than that I think the hardest part will be finding a shop that will assume the liability...

Hey, I never said I'd do it. I think I'll just deal with the lack of styles... more likely than not it'd take cryogenic treatment to make it strong enough; oh, and lots of money.
