LSD differences?
I recently purchased an LSD off of ebay that was locally owned. He claims that it is JDM and from an S13 chassis. Here are a few differences I noticed though:
1) it has 5-star output shafts, 300ZX? 2) when laid next to my stock open diff, the nose on the new LSD is roughly a half inch longer, requiring driveshaft shortening, but all subframe mounts seem to be in the correct places. 3) many different casting numbers on the new LSD, here are a few for somebody to crossreference with their pumpkins: STOCK Casting(top) "38311" "40F00" Casting(bottom) "012" "018" LSD Casting(top) "38311" "40F10" Casting(bottom) "013" "03" I tried as hard as I could to make out the casting numbers on my open diff, used a wire brush and all, so I posted what I could. What I'm more concerned about is what car is my new LSD from? The first thing that pops into my head is either 300ZX or maybe an S14? One more thing, on S13's, a VLSD was used, correct? And if it is VLSD, then it uses fluid friction to function, correct? So if the fluid is drained, then the two opposing output shafts should spin freely, right? I may be totally wrong here, i'm just taking an educated guess with this question. The reason I ask is because the output shafts of my new LSD are locked solid, you cannot spin them opposite of eachother at all. They will spin in the same direction, but not in opposite directions. Is this normal or has this unit been modified or locked up? I know thats a lot of questions, but if somebody has any knowledge about this stuff or could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Thanks, BEN
