Did I get a good deal?

I purchased this off of a mod of this forum. It's a 1997 240sx LE bone stock all over. Clean carfax but did have a dent repaired on the passenger side rear quarter panel. It has 133k on it and has been garaged since purchase. It's a one owner 240. The purchase price was 7,800. Did I get a good deal or did I get swindled?

man that drift tax is crazy

i dont mean to bash your purchase but for $7800 you could have got some pretty sweet cars (BMW E36, or E55 AMG, IS300, etc...) but hey this is a Nissan forum

Plus you got a 97 so you cant really swap anything unless you got the cash to pass emissions/smog/inspection/bribe some guy. hopefully this doesnt apply to you depending where you live

Good luck!

I live in Alabama a non emissions state so I could put coal rolling diesel in this thing and it wouldn't matter. Thank god for the south.

While that is tad on the high side, if you factor the average cost of ownership, performance potential per dollar (especially with no emissions), and overall fun factor versus the aforementioned cars I would have still chosen the S14.

Then again if I also had almost $8k to spend I would have bought a diesel Land Cruiser

I've got the diesel area covered. 2002 F250 with 7.3l powerstroke It doesn't have the power potential of a cummins or an allison transmission it does however work very well with the biodiesel I make.

I mean you already paid him and agreed to the price so why does it matter if you got "swindled"? Not like you can get a refund.anyways it's on the high side but for its condition being a rare sight nowadays and drift tax also it's not a horrible deal.

I guess it matters because if its that bad of a deal ill resell and just go with a low mileage 350z.

On a side note stock is what most look for in a project car. No one wants buy someone's failed project and theres no telling who or what went into the ride. Like playing a game of Russian roulette only with your money. And the reason I ask such like minded and devoted connoisseurs of the 240 world is only bc while I'm not new to turning a wrench or the 240 world I just wanted some opinions on the matter. Not being defensive just explaining my reasons for posting.

4000$ too much? Please tell me where you're going to find a clean 1 color kouki for 3k. Don't make me show you what you could pick up for 3k on craigslist. This isn't a bad deal, although some mods would have been nice to start your project mine. I got mine exactly like the Op's, 1997, clean title, 5 speed, Black, with the usdm lip, hks coilovers, intake, exhaust, and a rebuilt ka that hasnt gave me a SINGLE problem for the past 3 years. for 6500 flat.

Believe it or not there were emails that I saw of several other interested parties willing to pay 1500 to 1700 more than what I offered him.

6500 is a good deal especially with what you started with. It seems the 240 is on the endangered species list of vehicles. 97-98 especially!

You paid a premium. It's worth it to those who like the reassurance of having an unmolested car to begin with and, more importantly, having full knowledge of the vehicle from the day it left the lot. You didn't get swindled.

Looks pretty immaculate. Plus how many kouki do you see rolling around Bama where you live? Seems like a vast population of these cars have made it out west or held captive and undriven in a garage from what I've seen. Hardly ever see s14 's were I live in ohio, makes owning one even better knowing you look better than all the hondas that are everywhere. Even 350z is about as common as seeing a mustang anymore (okay, not quite). Still, I would pay that for a super clean car that has serious potential to become anything you want it to be, and it's not a common car depending where you live.

I will post more pictures later today but the interior is spotless. And yes I know sellers say that in ads to get buyers to the car only to find out the vehicle has been lived out of for years. The undercarriage is completely rust free. Even the jack points are straight and unbent which is unheard of for a used 240.

I lived in Atlanta for three years before enlisting in the army and in the 6 years I spent at different posts, cities, and where I currently in Alabama I have only seen one kouki and im not sure it was a genuine 97-98. And I have always had an eye out for 'em... both kouki's and zenki's.

It's the sad truth... that's what these cars are worth now. I bought my 98 for 3k, but that was 5 years ago. With how clean it is and the fact that it's black, I say you came out fine. You could have had a 300+ hoorsepower v8 luxury sedan for that price, but kouki's are the shit, and I would have jumped on it too.

the body and undercarriage look to be in good condition

price seems reasonable to me. not a 3-4k car in any way.

This is all that matters when you pay that premium. The frame and pinch look pristine, this is a $10,000 car in five years, if you maintain it, leave it all stock, and take care of that frame.

Don't jack it up without a nice block of wood between your jack and the rail.

I've seen hundreds of 240s and finding one with that clean of a frame is 1/100. Congratulations

Only problem you have now is... You can't modify it without facing a loss.
Install an sr20det? clutch? front mount? paint it? wheels? suspension? You will never get that 100% money back when you sell if you do any of those things.
So this is a great kind of car for a serious high budget project that you keep when finished. A 600rwhp 2jz-gte daily driver for instance with $20,000 invested.
You put one knock off part on the car and its value will be gone.

Well here's the thing, you did over pay, there is no selling it at the price you bought it anytime soon, you'd have to leave it as is, not driving the car to add more mileage and sit on it for a long time before you can doop someone into buying it like you got dooped, now question, what's the reason the rear tail lights aren't matching to the center garnish/trim?

^this. So if you like it just enjoy it, otherwise if you keep thinking about it is gonna keep you up at night. Take it as a lesson learned.

i'd say he only overpaid for it if he plans on gutting it and throwing an sr20 in it with some ebay coils.

if not, it's worth it to me to spend the extra $$$ knowing that you're not rolling around in someone else's unsafe shitbox with unknown problems that'd you get when buying someone else's shell/project car.

i'd say you got a nice buy, although gauge clusters(mileage) are easily swapped out, as well as getting a cheap maaco paint job. you really never know what you're getting anymore, but that thing is pretty clean.
