Turbo bolts backing out how to fix?
Ok this is the third time i have had this happen to me in 2 yrs. I keep having the nuts back out that hold the turbo to the manifold, and the nuts/bolts that bolt the turbo extension elbow to the turbo. last nite i went out and drove a little bit. came home and had an exaust leak again. I havent looked to see which bolts are loose, or which ones fell off but I am 90% sure it is the manifold to turbo.
My question is, How do you guys make ur turbos stay on. I have tightend the bolts to 45ftlbs. hopeing that would cure but didnt seem to. I had to throw out the factory retaining clip deal that u bend to keep the nuts from turning, as it broke when i needed to take off the trubo. one side did at least. I placed the good one on the side where it is impossible to tightent the bolts when the turbo is installed on the manifold on the engine. Is there any sort of high temperature locktite? I tried lock washers, they melt and become flat washers. Their is not enough stud length to place another nut to lock it in. Please help as this is annoying. Thanks, Chris |

This is a somewhat common problem with SRs I've heard. When my turbo/mani gasket blew out, and it took a while to pull off everything and fix it. It's annoying how the nuts back out even with those retaining clips on there. If I have to do it again, I think I'll just have a tiny spot weld put on each nut.

Ya dude I think mine came loose again as well... #$%^&*(
There has to be some kind of high-temp lock washers we can throw on there that wont melt... Canton says stainless steel washers should be ableto handle it as they can tolerate like 2500 degrees or something close to it. Don't know if those cheapass Orchard washers we bought were stainless steel.. Badlose: If you put a little spot weld on the nuts how will you get it off? :P Cut it? |

high temp locktite will usually burn off but its worth a shot if its all you got.
if they are the stud type, just drill them and use safety wire. a weld would work but if you ever needed to take it off you will kick yourself hard. Or you could buy some of those (expensive) bolts that have the allen head in the middle to expand them once they are in. They never loosen themselves. |

use fucking high quality lockwashers before you put on the nuts, then tighten them down tight u might also want to use loctite with that but get lockwashers, oh yea and thos emetal clips that cme stock that are supposed to "hold" the nuts in place, throw that shit out!
same thing happened to me- ur gunna have to take ur turbo off, the two oil and two coolant lines and detach from downpipe to do this, also check to make sure your manifold bolts arent broken cuz that happened to me. mike |

The nuts won't back out if you install the factory retaining plate properly.
Take the retaining plate, put it on, then torque the bolts down. Next, take a wrench (15mm should do the trick) that will fit over the retaining plate tabs that are next to the nuts, place the open end of the wrench over the tab/nut, then use a hammer to smack it down. The tab will start curving around the nut and will hold it in place. ~matt

ok ill give you guys my story since i was just going to post this same question, i had this happen to me 50 times and i just kept tightening it with a wrench til the stud broke off one day haha so i took the whole turbo out and then replaced the studs, then like 4 months later my stock turbo went bad so i put in another one and now a month or 2 later the nut came loose again.....i have used red loctite and it works somewhat, but from what i have experience itsead of using copper nuts or shit you should use stainless steel lock washer and lock nut due to the fact they dont expand as much, basicly this shit is the most annoying thing about sr's i think....really it is im gonna have to tighten the nuts again tomorow lets hope the studs dont break again or im FUCKED

they make these expensive nuts that you can get at autozone (they are like 1 dollar each) that have metal at the top. so when you thread them down you crush the metal. thats what I'm using, hopefully they will work ok.

mine did the same shit when I replaced my turbo. ..Broke studs and everything. Get some stainless steel lock nuts... they look like a normal nut except the top is bent oval, which bites down on the studs...
