SR concept behind tuning

so ya, i was under the influence of something ealier and i started thinking... Whats involved with tuning and why? Say you have stock injectors, turbo and MAFS and all you do is turn the boost pressure up, what are you changing when u tune this car? As you turn your boost pressure up, your boost guage will obviously read higher boost levels. Since boost guage reads off of fuel pressure, fuel pressure is increased as well so theres increased fuel to compensate for the increased psi. Whats the problem here?

Let me get this straight: You bought a 240 and an SR20DET...and NOW you ask what "tuning" is?

Your boost gauge reads off your fuel pressure?

"Tuning" as I see it, is making any adjustments to your car (usually your engine) to make it run better. Adjusting ignition timing, cam timing, boost, fuel injector duty cycle, fuel pressure;. etc. There are many aspects of tuning. When you turn your boost up, the computer compensates for that with more fuel. That doesn't mean the computer made the best adjustments to maximize power output. Also, the computer is only going to help you out, up to a certain power level. If you want to know about tuning you need to search, then, read, read, read. The subject is extensive.

If you want to run, like 5 psi over stock, there usually isn't a problem, and if that's your goals then you really don't need to know what tuning is.

Plain and simple, tuning is realizing the full potential of your car.

You are right when saying, "Since boost guage reads off of fuel pressure, fuel pressure is increased as well so theres increased fuel to compensate for the increased psi." But since when does having just a boost controller neccesitate tuning. It doesnt. But...

First off the stock ecu has a very conservative fuel and ignition curve. Turbo engines can be very picky and prone to detenation so the creators make the fuel curve so it can survive 200k miles with little problems. They also tune assuming none of the parts are going to change. So by leaning out the fuel curve, and advancing timing you can get decent power from just an ecu upgrade (mabye raising the boost a bit too).

Secondly do u realize how many things tuners change. From injectors, to MAFs, to turbos. This all GREATLY effects the way the ecu deals with power and fuel timing. Some things the computer can just plain not understand, such as bigger injectors. You dont need tuning for basic bolt ons (ie, intake, exhaust, dp, FMIC), but the next step is bigger injectors and bigger turbo. The stock ecu has no clue what to do in this case. So you have to tell it what to do, either with a reflash, a piggy back (bbooooo) or a standalone (FUCK YEA).

Tuning is EXTREMELY important. Dont ever think you can get by without it. If you want to make good power, and you want to do it somewhat reliable tuning is the most important upgrade you can do.

Ok, I must be missing something. What boost gauge reads off of fuel pressure? You have me very confused. Someone please explain. You learn somethin new every day I guess, but I've never heard of a boost gauge that reads of off fuel pressure.

Sorry just want to make sure I'm reading this right.

So you're saying that because your boost gauge reads fuel pressure, fuel pressure is increased, to compensate for increased psi? So the boost gauge see's your fuel pressure, so it gives you more fuel pressure?

I'm completely confused on what you're saying.

hold up there cheryle... you want to know what tuning is? tuning is the process by which variables are optimized to yield desired and results with a certain amount of consistency. i tune my guitars by adjusting machine heads, i tune my comp by adjusting FSB speeds, a MOTOR is tuned by creating optimal air/fuel ratios, A SUSPENSION is tuned by getting and keeping as much tire patch on the ground as possible.

too general are your questions green one.
