Steering rack CRAP?

Ok one of my cars is doing crazy stuff. When I turn all the way to the left a clunk noise comes from the front right side and when i straighten it out the steering wheel is cocked to the right, this only happens when Im moving
,,then if I hit a big bump or swereve hard it pops back to the center WTF?. Soo today I changed both tie rod ends and the upper right strut mount and still does the same shit. Do you guys think mabie the alignment is off and one side comes out too much? Or mabie the whole rack is fucked? Also are the SOHC racks the same as the DOHC ones? Car is a 92 coupe.

Also when I was driving earlier today with the steering wheel cocked I had to slow down fast for a red light and when I slammed on the brakes the steering wheel popped back to center,,It feels very weired and unsafe. Its usually dead center untill it pops then its cocked to the right alittle untill I pop it back.

sounds like an alignment issue. Get an alignment done. Oh but first check your steering column knuckle and make sure it's still snug. Maybe when you hit a bump hard it jarred it loose? From my experience the rack doesn't just take a shit for no reason. It usually takes time and alot of tell-tell signs( leaking, whining, squealing, wheel shudder, etc.).

Give that a try, but always a good rule, work on steering or suspension = new computer alignment.

good luck.

I dunno it drives pretty straight,,which is why I dont think its an alignment issue. I would hate to spend 75 on an alignment and having it be the rack then replacing the rack and having to spend another 75 for another alignment. This car is killing me,,I just got it on the road last week

i dont know if this will really relate to your issue but i had a similar problem. it drove straight but whenever i braked it would slightly pull to the right. checked it and noticed a little brake fluid on the brake line (leaking). so i figure its the line and save up a little to replace all w/steel braided ones. while driving i had to slam on the brakes cuz i got cut off by some guy. when that happened it pulled hard to the right. felt weird so i went to an industrial area and drove around to test it. i was going about 20mph coming to a stop light and all of a sudden the rear swung to the right. i was like wtf !!! so i countersteered and the rear swung to the left. car stopped about a foot and a half from the curb. anyways, jacked the car up to notice that the bolt that holds the lower control arm to the crossmember came off. check that to see if its off or loose.

nah i had the same problem when i took off all my good suspension parts. could be 1 of 2 things. The steering rack bushings are almost always worn out, and are SOOOOOOO easy to replace. Buy them from spl, their like 20 bucks and make a WORLD of difference. other than that, if you have one TC rod bushing more worn out that the other, it will cause that "wheel straightening under braking" effect. Get pillowball TC rods if you really wanna fix the problem, or at least new urethane bushings....

that reminds me, i have TC rods with Whiteline urethane bushings already pressed in place, ill sell em for $60 + shipping. thats cheap as shit considering cost of bushings, shipping, pressing, and the arms. lmk if anyone wants them email me at [email protected]
