Frankenstein Turbos. Changing Turbo Compressor/Turbine Wheels?
Hey guys, I've been reading up a lot about changing compressor and turbine wheels for Garrett turbos through various forums (mostly the DMS boys) and it seems possible. I'm looking to swap compressor wheels on my GT2871r 48trim turbo to a GTX3071r compressor/turbine combo but still retain the T25 flange layout.
Obviously the housings will need to be machined, but just wondering what everyone's experience has been changing wheels and such. Is a re-balance necessary? What companies are good to do this kind of swap that still exist today? I know S chassis owners usually just buy a whole package turbo but some insights on this stuff would be cool to hear from instead of just DSM guys. |

Bro old news..... The GT3071r was originally called the GT2971r....
Most people won't bother because its cheaper to just buy center house than to disassemble and do all that work.... https://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchan...Category_Code=

i would 100% not swap turbo internals without rebalancing it... easy way to force metal into your system

Yeah looks like most people agree that balancing is necessary for bb turbos, and maybe the journals of the old days could get away without it.
That said, has anyone experienced building a hybrid turbo and mix/matching wheels? Sizing and combinations to keep in mind like inducer and exducer in relation to turbine sizing? Backplate of the GTX to GT? And experience with third-party billet wheels like Mamba/Kinugawa? |

I'm not affiliated in any way, but contact turbo lab america, tell him what you're trying to accomplish and see if he can help you out.
Mamba/Kinugawa is chinese crap IMO.

After hours and hours of research reading DSM, Land Cruiser, and Audizine forums, I've settled on the compressor wheel of the GTX2867 after learning to read compressor maps, compressor/turbine info and whatnot. Seems to fit my power goals while also not going up to a large compressor wheel like the GT30.
After reading through Pure Turbo's thread back in 2012 when they were building hybrid turbos for people here on Zilvia, I searched them out and was surprised they are still in business in SoCal. They recommended me PT Turbos in Los Angeles, as Pure Turbos doesn't do hybrids anymore, they're focused on the BMW kids with their B58s and shit. After contacting PT Turbos and asking about the difference between the GT and GTX backplate bevel not being compatible, they said it was definitely possible to machine. As for compressor wheel, the new one will fit with some machining of the compressor housing to fit a larger inducer. After some debating on blade count, it seems like 8+0 would fit my application the best. Apparently they also stock KTS wheels, which are one of the biggest and most well known wheel manufacturers in the world, as apposed to Mamba/Kinugawa. All in all, got a quote for upgraded billet compressor wheel and balance for much much cheaper than a GTX2867 brand new. I'll return to this thread after it's built, which will definitely be a couple of months. Hopefully it'll help someone in the future if they're looking to build their own hybrid turbo. |

Cool the 2nd Gen of the GT2871R is the GTX2867R and just heard good things....
Just question why not use the new G Series? Just cost?

Looks like you've done your research and figured out the right size wheel to run. The GTX 2867 is a great upgrade from the 2871 and it's nice to know there are still companies making hybrid turbos. I'll be interested to see your results.
