s14 VLSD install
Has anybody installed VLSD from a USDM abs s14 into an non-abs s14? I'm afriad i won't be able to squeeze it in with the drive shaft. I read that it's an option to see if theres enough play to soak up the extra .75" but I have yet to hear of anybody who has done so.

You're joking right?
There's at least a few hundred people who have, myself included. And a few dozen threads discussing it.

My friend and I just installed a ABS s14 VLSD into my car that doesn't have ABS. The install went smoothly. We just bolt everything in normally, then on the drive shaft, bolt that on then adjusted the support bearing so it can bolt back on its location. You'll understand what i'm talking about when you see it yourself. I heard this only works for s14 driveshaft. o_O
If you have an sr20 and removed the cap at the end of the tranny, then you'll have about .50 of play on the shaft.

Thanks for the input. I searched every VLSD thread on this board and others and haven't found anybody doing an abs VLSD install into an non-abs s14.
The closest I found was that guy who put in an jdm abs vlsd but swapped the driveshafts as well. And also the write up on www.driftkat.com but he used an s14 non-abs vlsd. |

Just to make this clear, you do know that a JDM diff is exactly the same as a US diff, right? Not saying you don't, but you mentioned both and I want to make sure you did know that.

I was just being specific so they knew who i was refering to. Anyway, the one on driftkat.com was an non-abs vlsd which happens to be jdm. I don't know exactly how it went with the options in japan but the ratios are slightly different and I guess there were more cars sold that had VLSD but no abs. It's hard to find non-abs VLSD's off s14s here. Every other write up I've seen had people using j30 vlsds.

True, but the J30 is identical to the S14, save for a slight gear ratio change. Fitment and install are the same.
JDM S14 diffs have the same ratio as US cars, the only different S14 unit you'll find is in the UK with the outboard diff cooler, the diff case has two ports for input/output of fluid. Otherwise it too is identical.

Vlsd
I know this is probably a stupid question but how can you tell if you have the VLSD? and what kind of fluid does it use?
I have a 97 240SX SE 5-speed.

It is a stupid question, and it doesn't warrant my time to answer it. You're sitting in front of the single largest source of information the world has ever known. Take advantage of it.

Could you at least point me in the right direction on this. I looked at the tech tab and it keeps saying error and I did a search but all that talks about is people who want to install one.
Give me a break Im new at the whole forum thing.

You could take it out, open up the rear cover, and look to see if it's an open differential or vlsd. I'd post pics of each but I'm pretty sure you're not going to go through all that impractical work to see if you have open or vlsd.
Best way to tell is do a burnout and have a friend outside telling you if one tire or both tires are spinning. You should do it a few times because every once in a while, you can get an open diff to react with both tires spinning. If you're buy yourself, do several of them and if you always leave 2 strips, then you have vlsd or lsd. Jacking up the rear of the car and spinning one tire while having someone hold others isn't accurate so I wouldn't depend on that method. |
