with the engine still running (i assume it still runs), don't rev it up, pull the #1 spark plug wire out (loosen it b4 you start the engine, leave it all the way down in the hole) using a rubber handled pliers or something (so you don't zap urself with the ignition spark &nbsp. IF the "banging" sound gets quieter, could be bad news......could be a wasted conn rod bearing or wrist pin bushing (on piston). i jumped to this diagnosis cuz ur car is turbo'd, right?
if it's more of a "slapping" noise, i suppose it could be the timing chain prob that these cars have... . good luck!

that could be the cause for this but remeber that i had the motor rebuilt and i just got it running last week. it has less than 100 miles on it. maybe it could be the timing.

i got another question, its a dumb one but it just popped up in my head.

suppose if i put the distributor in backwards(meaning that the when the #1 cyclinder is suppose to fire, the #4 cyclinder is actually firing)

wouldnt the car not even run?/

pplus, could it be the knock sensor, i had a hard time trying to put the connector on, ,maybe thats why i am getting check engine light? and with bad timing it could run like shit.

i dunno, tonight i am going to check everything, so please give me suggestions

Have you checked the code your computer's throwing? That may help a bit to see what's causing the CEL to come on, which may determine what's wrong w/ your engine.

Take your oil filter off and saw it in half and look for metal shavings also drain the oil and put a magnet in the oil to also search for metal shavings. If that comes out negative take the plug out and see if the elactrode is gone. Now if everything comes out fine drop your oil pan and check the crank cuz you might of spun a bearing on it. Did you use clevite bearings?
