another alt ques

I got my alternator replaced for the 3RD TIME! when the meachanic turned on the car, it started wining really loud and its started to smell like it was burning. He turned it off and said that it must be somthin in the wiring. How can i check and see whats wrong. anyonehave the same problem?

the noise was due to the belt being loose/slipping on the pulley. so you probably smelled the belt as its started to burn.
I would suggest a better mechanic.

what kind of alts are you using new or remans. I had mine replaced 3 times too (not for the same problem). some remans have a problem with the casing bolts coming loose and the inside spinning inside the casing and burning up, this happened with my oldsmobile I used to have 4 times. more recently in my s13, my last one would ground itself and drain the battery when I shut the engine off, really weird, took forever to figure it out. I believe the shop was trying to rip me off though, took it to a different shop, they put in a new one, and its working fine for over a year .
