Hey folks.
I'm probably gonna put the tweets in the sail panels, but I was wondering if any of you audiophiles have any other suggestions... perhaps closer to the door speaker? Thanks alot.

Hmm.
I would have thought the lower the better. Do you have a set mounted there? My SE didn't come with the tweeter setup so I'm not quite sure the location on the A pillar. Appreciate the suggestion.

*note* i have tweets mounted in my doors as pictured above, in the arch above the handrest above the 6.5s they sound OK but from what i have heard, the A pillar and just inside the rearview (ie on a bimmer) are the best places

It really depends on two things:
-Type of tweet; ie. brightness and such -distance to listener. To get the best imaging with a tweet u want to get a decent amount of power as far away from the listener as possible while avoiding any interferences (between tweet and listener) as highs are sensitive to objects in path. By placing the tweets as far away as possible, you create a better more realistic sound stage. I'm in the process of building custom kick panels for my CDT 3 way set and have found that the foot wells produce the best imaging without seeming to be over-bright as the pillar mount will sound. I strongly suggest that you hook your tweet up with a bunch of wire and try each location for a few days; until you decide which works better with your setup. If you do decide to do kick panels and need assistancel, just ask. |

On my S13 i put them in the stock kick panels, right next to the door speakers, with the woofer in the stock door speaker location. I like this better than A-pillars because the tweet and woofer are right next to each other.

The stock se A pillar mounts for the tweets should be good. The tweets get drowned out by road noise so you want to avoid the kick pannels

One thing I really dislike about them being in the kick pannels is the sound quality really depends on how you sit. If your leg gets between your head and the speaker it won't sound good, but if you sit with your legs to the inside it'll sound great.

Wow!
Once again I'd like to thank you guys for your valuable input. But it still seems to come down to preference. I'll listen for a few days in various locations and report back what I like. Thanks again. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

"The best place for tweeters are corners on your dash, facing up." That's what the owner of the audio place I go told me.
I said that the sound reflects off the frontglass and makes a nice sound. I tried it and it sounded prety nice. |

Aiming tweets at anything super hard like glass will make them sound super harsh; like titanium domes on steriods. I think this used to be done before we had the quality of tweets we do now. I might be wrong but I didn't like them this way and have been warned about this technique by some pros. You will get the best imaging if they are no more than 6" from your mid driver (rule of thumb) 'cause the phase is still correct. But no matter what; put them wherever it sounds best for you because they're your ears. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() |

Regular round tweets won't fit in the pillars. You have to get ones like shown in the picture above, otherwise it will have to mount on the pillar...unless you wanted to do a custom thing and cut a hole.

I don't know about the actual maximim size, but i put in rather large MB Quart ones and they fit in the stock location by cutting out the platic ribs behind the metal grill. The grill stays in fine without them there. Oh, by the way, I have the trim for the A pillars with the tweeter grills from my car that I am parting out if someone is interested in them. They are the blue-green color. |

in my 95 240sx se my eclispe tweeters fit in the stock a pillar location fine... and that would probably be the best place for them other than kick panels, and i would suggest a componet set, not coaxials...another thing is it actually sounds better if you only have the highs up front, ideally you would want the subs up front also for imaging purposes, but in a 240 it would be really hard, ive seen it done in a feiro, but it was totally custom, no heater hoses or anything, it had 3 10 inch id subs in the front behind the dash, and id horn component set...the imaging was good as was the sound quality

The higher the frequency the more sensitive a sound is to position and interference. Subs can be put almost anywhere in a system and achive the same effect. Tweets, mid-range and mid-bass should be up front (to reproduce a live venue sound). Obviously mid-bass is not nearly as sensitive as tweets so they can be put in doors and such. Putting mid-range and mid-bass behind you with tweets in front will create some seriously fugged up imaging and will sound dis-located and artificial. So keep the tweets close to the mid-range and mid-bass reasonably close as well.
Don't forget to aim the drivers before you commit to a location and angle though, aiming is very important. I like to aim my CDTs at the sunroof, glass reflection is bad but it's absorbed by the rear seats mostly. |

just another idea.....Auto Meter LH a-pillar pod (for gauges) #20807 single, or #20806 dual. they also offer a RH pod (for RHD cars in Japan) #23903 single for the passenger side. AM does stock them here in the US. i bought Polk component speakers, the tweeters are round and fit perfectly in the pods. we hot glued them in from behind so they'd stay in the plastic pod securely. very clean look

for image reasons...i would put them on your pillars...but for acoustic reasons, the closer to your mid speakers the better...you really don't want the highs to stand alone...they should blend in with the other speakers...
