Can anyone explain what a dropping resitor does? and why it would not be connected to anything (is it only used for A/T or M/T model's)

car is a 92 MT

Only used for automatic cars, regulates the line pressure.

Lots of people unplug it for firmer shifts...which is cool for ~6 months until they need a new trans.
