Put a Haltech on my ITB ka!

Well there haven't been any events worth going to in a while, so I figured I'd work on my car. I've gotten a lot of stuff done in the last couple months.

I've never seen any good write-ups on Haltech's stuff on here, so I figured I'd do it. Here goes...

As many of you know, I built a Megasquirt modified to control ignition also, and have had it on my car for a few months. It was a great setup, worked very well for what it was. Long story short I talked to haltech and after a lot of thinking, I decided to try it out. I went with an E8, with a flying lead harness, and LS1 (corvette) individual coil ignition.

The build Quality is incredible. One look at the board in the ecu was all it took to convince me. There are easily 10x the number of components in the haltech than the MegaSquirt. That's how many more functions it performs, easily. Dave at Haltech actually installed the harness for me, and let me tell you, it's incredible! He heat shrunk every inch of wire to seal it better than the stock harness, and covered about 90% of it in flame retardant material. It's amazing.

I decided I wanted to run the LS1 coils because they are about the most potent mass produced coils available. They are NUTS. Getting bit by them hurts like hell! They have built in ignitiors too, so no need for another ignition module to control them. Paired with the custom MSD 8.5mm super conductor wires I made, it's pretty much the most bad arse ignition system you can get. And the haltech runs all of it. The wires only have about 40 ohms per foot of resistance, so it's performs just about identical to a coil over plug setup. You don't need to make any kind of custom trigger wheel for the ignition either like I did for my MegaSquirt. It just takes the signal from the stock distirbutor, easy as pie.

My megasquirt had an internal map sensor (on the ecu itself) which is an ok design, but requires you to run a vacuum line into the cabin to the ecu. It's just a design prone to failure. The E8 uses an external sensor which is much better than the internal design, and response is better because the vacuum signal doesn't have to travel to the ecu. My map sensor line is no more than a foot long, really cool.

Alright, enough talking, pics now!

the haltech installed. where is it? haha hid all the wires!

ran the harness under the manifold. You can see the wires all heat shrunk.

The LS1 coils and wires and whatnot. Made a cool aluminum bracket for them too.

coils up close

another...

a closeup of the map sensor, harness in its heat wrap, and distribution block

while Dave did the engine harness, I relocated my battery, slimmed down the chassis harness, and fuse block

Where else would you put the ECU? hahaha I love it!

And for shits and giggles...

Impressions: We got it running about a week ago and I've been tuning it since. It literally fired up the first try, and held a rock solid idle with the base map! I was amazed. It is technologically light years ahead of the MegaSquirt. I'm really glad I decided to try the Haltech out. Even with it fully tuned, the MegaSquirt couldn't hold the idle under 1krpms or it would fluctuate really bad and act up. The Haltech will hold it at 500 rpms if I want it to, and purr like a kitten. And this is with no idle control valves or anything! The tuning software is very straight forward, and easy to learn. The E8 tunes by every 250 rpms, versus the 500 with MegaSquirt. This allows much finer tuning, and extraction of extra hp.

And the best thing about the E8 on a four cylinder engine is that it has enough drivers to run the fuel injection fully sequentially and the ignition direct fire. This means each injector fires by itslef, not in pairs like the MegaSquirt, and each spark plug fires seperately, not batched like the MegaSqurit. And with the right tuning, you can get each injector to fire when the intake valve is closed, so when the fuel reaches the valve it is open. This is obviously far superior to two injectors firing at tdc. More hp and tq to be had with this setup. And having each plug fire independently is much better than firing in pairs, because one doesn't need to fire when the other does, which can create problems if you have any extra fuel in the cylinder that is not supposed to be firing.

The E8 does all kinds of other stuff too. boost control, fan control (which I'm running), tach output, wideband control, and about 10 other things I can't think of, it's crazy. You can also select the type of rev limiter you want. I did spark cut on all 4 cylinders at the same time, so it's gonna sound like all hell has broken loose, with complementary fireballs! rock on!

Cliffsnotes: the E8 ROCKS! I'm REALLY stoked I got one! If you want the most from your engine, there's nothing better. Period.

I also got some JWT cam! I can tell once I get it all tuned, they are gonna make it a whole new engine. Thanks to them. I'd suggest anyone who wants cams for their ka, get JWT. I should be getting on the dyno by the end of this week, so we'll see what the new setup makes. I'll be sure to post up the dyno!

Anyone who has any questions about their ecu's or capabilities, contact Dave at Haltech USA.

Regards,
Scott

Sweet setup. My good friend kevin is shopping for a standalone setup for his KA-T. How hard of an install is the haltech? Can it be done by somebody who has done the usual SAFC and BCC and Speed Cut Defencer and Boost Controllers and Turbo Timers. I ask these questions to find out what needs to be done to run this setup because its either this or AEM EMS and the Haltech seems more feasible.

thanks a bunch

the Haltech is really easy to install. Actually much easier than MegaSquirt. It comes with software that has the entire intallation manual, pinout for the plugs to the ecu and a bunch of other stuff. The wires that come out of the plugs for the ECU just have to be terminated (soldered) to your sensors, plug in the relays, a couple fuses, and you're ready to input the values to start and tune your engine.

The E8 is a far more capable ecu than the AEM unit. Even if they were comparable in terms of features, you can put the haltech on any engine you please (including rotaries). This is not so for the AEM. Hell, you can't even put an AEM ecu for a ka on an SR.

Tell your buddy to shoot Dave an email, he'll answer any questions he has.

I run an E6X on my SR it's great the new halwin software is excellent as well plus I love the fact they can run off of a nissan CAS trigger configurable inputs and outputs are also a great thing to have in a performance car. Now that I have used it I wouldn't ever go to anything else...I will post some pics of my install in the coming weeks.

the main gripe i have with the e6 is the lower resloution fuel maps (500 instead of 1k) but overall I absloutly love thier systems for ease of wiring and universality of the system

I'm hoping for around 175 peak hp. maybe more, maybe less, I don't really care that much. I want a big, kickass powerband, and I know it'll have that, so it's all good.

I'm gonna try and hit 200 with stock block (Headwork being the only exception). Eventually....

ITB's and ITC's on a KA! HOTSTUFF!!
I hope you dont mind me asking how much this setup up cost and how many hours you put into it. What are the plans to do to the bottom end when you start building that up?Just anything you can do to allow the motor to rev higher? I'm basically wondering what the goal is for the motor, so far the only thing I can tell is you want a broad powerband which you should have no matter what noting the motors displacement. But how much hp is the end all goal and to what rpm? Have you ever thought of making a plenum so that way your motor is not inhaling hot under the hood air?

going ITBs was the point, my only thinking would be to do some form of a hood mod, similar to what cowl induction was used for.

Sideinduction scoop? ie 1967 Chevelle SS scoops, just a rise on each side of where the cowl is(instead of cowl induction)

In the not too distant future, I'll be running ducting to the velocity stack inlets. I have watched air intake temps on the laptop, and they aren't that bad. rarely gets much over 115*f. Air vents will take that down to ambient.

specs on the ITB's? GSXR 1000 (2003) Throttle bodies mated to a chopped off stock intake mani. I'll be making a new one in the future tho.

Ash: email Dave at haltech. He has the diagram.

firstly, i love your setup, i am sure it sounds like the shiet!

i am running ahaltech too on my CA18DET and couldnt believe how easy it was to install, i simply spliced into my stock harness for CAS, Ignition and other sensors and jsut ran wires for the sensors i needed to add like MAP, water temp, air temp...

i am about to use the same GSXR1000 ITB's on my CA19DET motor with a custom plenum and a cut 8 port JDM intake manifold..

i was wondering, did you use the Suzuki GSXR TPS? and how did you plug the injector boss' on the ITB's (left the ol injectors in there or welded them up??)

thanks

set up looks awsome, i wanna see/hear some vids..

John: for your KA-T I'd suggest an identical setup to mine. Pretty much as good as it gets. Only difference is that you'd run a 2 or 3 bar map sensor instead of the 1 bar I'm running. And get the haltech boost control solenoid, and control boos with the Haltech also. That way you can get rid of EVERY peice of electronics you are using for your engine.

CA19: Yeah, I used the GSXR TPS. I found some nuts at home depot that fit just perfectly into the holes for the injectors on the TB's, and JB welded them in, and sanded down the JB so it's follows the port shape of the TB. Same with the "secondary" butterflies.

i'll eb starting my project this weekend and hopefully install after christmas and new years... always wondered how a ITB set up would work on a boosted CA? it may only make a few couple ponies, but i am sure the sound will be worth it.. i am already making 305whp, so i am good... looking for more response.

thanks
