The wideband sensor needs to be at least 18 inches from turbo/headers, that's what most manufacturers recommend.
So I would recommend welding a second bung and keeping the stock sensor for now as the voltage outputs of a narrow band sensor and wideband sensor are not the same. |

If its any help, I run a test pipe on my S14 so I had the AEM bung welded by a muffler shop to my test pipe. so far its doing good. I also have a turbo on my KA and in the AEM manual from what I remember recommended 36 inches away from the hot side of the turbo. You dont want to too far, but too close will also mean that the 02 sensor will burn out quicker, also the incredible temps of the exhaust might cause some harm as well, so I wouldnt have it welded too close to the turbo on the downpipe either.

You can just weld another bung at a muffler shop on the downpipe or testpipe. Just make sure the sensor is not pointing completely down or up.

I run one about 6-8" from the turbo outlet, with a heat sink on it made from aluminum sheet metal.
i have another in the bottom of the down pipe right after it curves under the car. the first location is accurate all the time, the one further down stream is slightly off at idle, but once you start pushing some exhaust gases it ends up reading the same as the first location. i am running a AEM in first position and a innovate LC1 in secondary. yes i know its dumb, but i bought a LC1 to use as a wideband for my megasquirt to run off of. then we started getting such good deals on AEM's that i wanted a gauge, but for the cost of the innovate unit i just bought the AEM. I didnt feel like removing the LC1 and pulling the dash apart to get to it.

I have ran mine there for a few months. its been fine. you can also get a O2 extender bung from innovate which allows you to run it closer. or i have even seen guys buy spark plug nonfoulers from autozone and drill it out and use it to space out O2s, but thats mostly for OBD2 tricks. you can probably get a shop to weld one in for you for under 40$. i know i have done a ton of them, i normally charge 35 for downpipes that are off. it only takes like 5mins to drill the hole out and weld it up.
