14 year old motors = BAD GEAR SYNCHROS IN TRANNY
lol...these conversations are funny...guys....240s are OLD cars...even SRs are OLD motors...bad gear synchros are a normal part of owning OLD motors...nissan trannys from the late 80s and 90s are NOTORIOUS for gear synchros going to hell from what ive read about nissans newer trannys....especially the VQ tranny...nissan learned from its mistakes in the 90s and MAJORLY beefed up the gear synchros in their transmissions...PLUS...its a tranny that incorporates NEWER technology...SR/KA/CA trannys are all the same tranny that was developed in the mid to late 80s |

if your synchro is bad double clutch ie shift to neutral, let go of clutch and then apply clutch again, then shift. that is how the old manuals worked when synchros didn't exist yet

i would recommend you immediately drain your tranny and fill it up with gear oil...drive it around for about 20 min...drain it again to make sure you get ALL the ATF out of it...then fill it back up with either redline gear oil or royal purple |

My machanic notice that there is sign of moisture in the system. He advice me to pump the clutch pedal 15-20 times before driving. See if it grinds. If not, most likely that is caused by the moisture. On my case, that helps ALOT! But, I wonder why many people has the same problem on 2nd to 3rd? Note: Read your manual! You can ONLY use GL-4 fluid!!! The GL5 has additives that will eat up some metals(bronze ?) in our tranny. Try to use Royal Purple which is GL-4! I believe the RedLine is GL-5 if I am not mistaken. |

what do you need to slam it into 5th for anyway. just shift it slow and easy. you cant redline 4th any way unless your speed limiter is removed. i wouldnt spend money to fix that unless it was a lower gear.
but i would try the fush then GOOD gear lube. |

actually people DO put atf in manual transmissions. just not all of it. people with subaru's know they have really tight or hard to shift trannys and they make a mixture of gear oil, engine oil and atf iirc. it helps a shit load for synchro's or hard to shift transmissions. look on nasioc and you can read about it.
but it would be easy to rebuild. yourself. get a fsm and find a shop in the area the has a press. or find a machine shop. then take the tranny off and pull the bell housing off, then lay the tranny on its side. there are either 14mm or 18mm bolts holding the tranny casings together. split the case and then remove the gearshaft that has 5th on it and buy new synchro's and install them. you can rebuild a manual for pretty cheap if you can find someone willing to press the gears on and off for you.

i called the dealer just to make sure of the oil to use and they said 80W90. Does this sound right? I got the 240 and the guy i got it from didnt give me an owners manual so i dont know for sure which weight to use.
should i just trust the dealer to do it instead of going back to that shop that put in the DEXRON ATF stuff in my manual? what kind of gear oil would the dealer be using? I still kinda wanna get the royal purple/redline stuff but how would the factory nissan gear oil that the dealer would use compare to rp/redline? |

gear oil and regular oil are more of a dependance on where you live and the ambient air temperatures outside
in vegas...because of the heat here...on a temp to viscosity scale...it is recommended that nothing less than 10w-40 oil be used in ANY motor during the summertime...personally i perfer to use a thicker gear oil as well (i use the 80w/140 synthetic gear oil in my tranny and diff from RedLine)...id suggest you find a temp to viscosity oil chart and start learning about whats best to run in your motor at different times of the year...running different weight oils and gear oils will have a huge impact on the normal running temp of your motor and also the operations of your motor in extreme cold or extreme heat the dealership will tell you bullshit...MOST dealers you call will tell you to run 5w-30 or 10w-30...thats the most common oil used now-a-days in your average consumer cars...the KA/SR/CA were all engineered to run on 10w-40 as their BASE oil weight...but like i said...go do some research thru google (or thru the wonderful search tool on zilvia) as you will find that most dealerships have no idea what the hell theyre talking about at times |

alot ive seen anywhere from 8-10k. not really worth it in my opinion. but as the op stated, im havin the same problem. im considering jsut gettin another tranny and crossin my fingers that its in decent shape. either that or shellin out an extra 1800 or so(not sure) for an oem sr tranny from rhdjapan. or just rebuilding the tranny.

i think i figured out a temporary solution for this shit
when i shift from 4th to 5th... and im kicking the clutch in, before going to 5th and after leaving 4th... i shake the stick left and right in neutral real quick (with the clutch still in), then it doesnt grind when i move it into 5thafter all that i guess for now ill just stick with doing this |

im trying to figure out whether its from releasing the gas or from pushing in the clutch |
