The Running Thread
Figured I'd start a thread for people that enjoy running, or think they might be interested in getting into it. Any advice on shoe selection, clothing, hydration packs, energy gels and all of the above are welcome. As well as any upcoming marathons, half marathons, 10k's, 5k's anything that has to do with running.
Personally I have just started running barefoot, well pretty damn close to barefoot with these bad boys ![]() But I've had a few guys on here ask about them after I posted them up in another thread. As of now I'm still working my way up in them to avoid stress fractures or other injuries from making such a dramatic change from my normal running shoes which I will usually do around 5-8 miles per day in my Sauconys or Asics. Thanks to dedication and perseverance I went from weighing 194lbs after high school down to 131 at my lowest running weight which is quite a good amount considering I'm only 5'6. Just figured I'd give you guys some background as well as see how many athletes we have on zilvia |

Just keep on running. Before joining the Marine Corps I weighed in at 186 for 5'6 and after I left boot camp I got down to 149. I am a solid 160 right now. I hate running but at the same time I love it. It's a matter of keeping with it and not quitting.

Don't worry, I have your same body type but I've learned to run more efficiently. I can run faster/ longer than some people lighter and taller than me, it's all in building lung capacity and stamina, man.

I love running. Even with my IBA on. I might consider the vibrams after talking to razorbladez909.
I have been using Under Armor running shoes this year and love it. As for hydration systems. I really don't like to drink water while I'm running. Maybe before or after the run. I have taken energy gels while running and I started cramping up like crazy. I won't be doing that again.

![]() For hydration packs I use a simple camel back that only has the water bladder when the heat is up and I know its going to be a long run, definitely not interested in getting heat stroke lol As far as energy gels I've used GU and several others that the names slip my mind right now. But I find that after running a good distance the energy gels will help a good amount but the key is staying hydrated, I know most gels recommend at least two glasses of water otherwise you will experience cramping issues. As far as regular shoes go, I LOVE Saucony's, like pillows for my feet hah. I've gone through several sets over the years and have always felt great in sauconys, even after running some 16 mile runs I still felt great. I've used Asics and as much as I like them, I do get the occasional blister from both sets I've bought. I used the underarmour shoes that you talk about and personally they don't work well with how I run, or my feet. I did like how the materials felt on my foot but they just appeared more form over function for me. As much as I like Nike's designs and ideas, I have never liked how they're running shoes performed with my feet for the most part, although I do like my Nike Free's because they are a minimalist design like the vibrams but do still leave you with some padding. Have any of you guys participated in Marathons/half marathons? I've always wanted to but even though I run alot have never given myself the opportunity to compete. But I hope to change that this coming year. |

Those vibram "shoes" look painful. I was a cross country runner throughout middle school and high school. In middle school I was running 6 minute miles and they only got quicker from there. As for shoes I have always liked Nike since they held through the abuse of running over various types of terrain. I'm 5'7, 125lbs.

Never been able to get into running. Mostly because I've never gotten myself over the endurance hump to the point where it could be fun. I used the same excuse to not get into biking, but I started that recently and I've been enjoying that a lot more.

I was a cross country runner and distance track runner in high school made it on Varsity. Was 190lbs in 8th grade, and when I joined I got down eventually to 145lbs. Kept with that for most of high school, stopped running after high school and now I'm back up to 180lbs. Running can be a lot of fun because where you run. I loved our 3 mile races because it would be in a regional park, we'd go up hills and down hills, through mud, etc. It's a great way to feel the nature around you.
Although, it's a lot easier to run with a team or people. I feel like I have no time for running anymore, but to be honest I do. Everyone does. Wake up at 5AM and go run for an hour. It takes 2 weeks for your body to get used to running. It's all in your head. My first day running in regular Saucony tennis shoes, I ran 6 miles without stopping because I kept telling myself I wanted to keep up with everyone and not embarrass myself. |

Touge Noob s13, Honestly the shoes are not painful at all once you use them, but you HAVE to basically reteach yourself how to walk/run and that takes some time. If you try to run in them like you typically would in regular running shoes you can screw yourself up really bad, especially if you heel strike. I'm no expert by any means but I've read some good stuff on barefoot running, and the way alot of it is explained makes alot of sense to me. Some of the fastest runners out there are from Kenya, and they typically grow up running barefoot and alot of the faster marathon runners of today have switched over to minimalist shoes as well. While I do love my shoes I am not trying to say they are for everyone, and I won't because honestly I'm not an orthotics or biomechanics expert. |

ive been running alot for the last 2 years. do a 6 mile non-stop run at least once a week including hills and a lot of steps along with 1-2 fast paced miles about 3 times a week
I weigh about 180 at 5'11, but i dont have much fat. Ive been trying to lose weight so I can drop my 2-mile even lower than a 12:50 but its tough as hell. As for shoes, Im sure they arent considered running shoes, but I love my Nike Cortez. The sole in these things last forever. I think ive probably got 1000+ running miles on them and they are still holding up great I however prefer to run with only 1-2 other people. A big group tends to slow me down and i feel i get tired faster love the runners high after about 4 miles though, feels great! |

To help stay in shape? To push yourself physically? To get out of your comfort zone? I'm sure there are plenty of reasons I can throw out here. Some say the same about our car hobby, I don't see a reason to throw an entire paycheck into my car, but some people do, see what I did there? Should try it man, might end up liking it
![]() I typically try to focus on setting a couple specific checkpoints on my runs, and an average time I should be around at each checkpoint. Lets say on my run there is a stop sign/tree/ fire hydrant, pretty much any landmark and lets say at a steady pace I will be at this check point by 3:00, each time I go for my run I will try to get to that point faster and faster. You can do this multiple times on your runs and after a while it really isn't too difficult to keep track of your checkpoints. That is one way I have increased my speeds, another method I was taught is meant to be pretty exhausting, but so is increasing your running speed. This method is relatively simple but involves full effort at the sprints. Basically you will sprint 80-90% for :30 seconds, once you get done with your sprints you will ease into a good jog of about 50-60% for 1:00 minute after you will go back into sprints, repeat this cycle for 10-12 sets or more if you'd like. One thing is you will know if you are putting out or not and its alot better to do if you have someone to compete with. |

Thanks...I was also told to put weight on myself and just run 4 to 5 miles 3 times a week. Tried it for a month and cut a full minute off my time.

you can always get one of those mini parachutes that sprinters use to increase speed, i don't have any personal experience with them, but I can imagine how much wind resistance would help to increase your speed.

i used to run every now and than.. but i find the treadmill to be easier since I can just set it for minutes and stay consistent since i can push myself to complete those minutes.. when i run streets, i tend to slow down and walk when I get tired. I used to run alot back in highschool when I played foodball *id go run on my own time sometimes*, but that was like over 9 years ago.
Now Im just riding my bike, I know bike riding is not as intense as running, but just double your millage on the bike should be good enough *from what Ive read.

I have been running for years. I am a fan of the intense uphill sprint to you can barely breath. hahaha and then slow down till you get your breath back and then sprint again.
I run in Griffith Park and I can tell when I am hitting my marks by how much I sweat. If I have taken time off, it usually takes 3-4 runs before I start hitting my marks again. Average run is 3.5-5 miles. Usually this is a 45-60 minute exercise. I use Saucony's and have for years. Love them. I am 5'7 and when I was in my 20's could not go over 128lbs. Unfortunately age brings weight. LOL Now when I am active I usually weigh in around 160-170. If I get inactive i.e. stop running or working out for a month or two I go back up to 175-180. Yuck. Not fat but definitely not light. All I can say is if you don't do some kind of cardio now you should start. Get in the habit early. Its easy to say I can't gain a pound I have nothing to worry about. LOL There are some fortunate's who have metabolisms that don't slow down though most do with age. Which means if you do not start working out and change eating habits? Fat will come. LOL

If your looking for speed, what we did was use training shoes (regular running shoes you'd find in department stores, talk to them about "training shoes"), then for a race day we would use "flats" which were shoes that were extremely lightweight and smaller than normal. I'm not sure if running in flats is good for long distance (over 3-5 miles) or for training because there is little to no support in them, which draws my attention to the weird feet covers posted by the OP.
As for feeling pain and stopping, some pain is normal. There is a difference between pain of joints and such, and pain of muscles. If you are sore and aching, then you want to try and take an "ice bath". Basically the coldest water possible with ice in it. Soak in there for 15min or so. A cold shower is the next closest thing. It squeezes much of the unwanted lactic acid out of your muscles. Also, you can try going on a "recovery run" which is a run maybe at a bit of a slower pace (not too slow too where it is just junk miles). Typically for a recovery run for a regular distance runner running 50-60 miles a week, would be a 5-6 mile run, at probably 7 minute mile pace, depending on your own mile times (7 based off my own old 4:38-5:38 mile times, 4:38 being fastest mile, 5:28 being my fastest average mile out of a 3 mile race). It's all in the head, just remember that. You can run forever, you'd be surprised. Just don't eat shit (food) before you run. Bananas are perfect, honey oat nature valley bars are great, etc. |
