When my first shell was totalled out, we asked our insurance company for a little time before they took the car. We told them I had been "restoring it" and would like to get some of the new parts off first. They said OK and I had a stock part replacement party. When they finally picked it up, it looked like something you'd see at the junkyard. 3 different wheels, hubs with broken studs, brakes bolted on but not attached, fenders and bumper ziptied on, etc.
