so after its all finished and you come back to the us, your bringing this piece of beauty with you right?!
YEah, this th is coming back with me. As of right now, it is likely that I am going to leave it here for a little while and let a shop that I trust finish up things like tuning and soem wiring and get the car running for me while I go off to Iraq for a while or work on getting established in my new career that I am starting in the next few months. This will allow me to devote my attention to work while not having to spring for tools and the car will still get done. I am also going to use the extra time to look into getting Kaizo to export it from Japan that way the thing can be driven on U.S. roads without too much fuss. We will see how this little plan works out in the next couple of weeks, but for right now we are approaching it this way so I can have it RUNNING in the United States by next summer.

Option 1 -
RB25DET Mission with O.S. Giken Cross Mission Set and soem treatments from Richmond Gears. Pros: Street Drivable Availability of parts, I have the 25 Case ready to go back, proven to about 750-800 before it blows up and in some cases even more. Cons: Cost (2300.00 or more for the gearsets, plus rebuild kit for the mission, plus shipping cost for the transmission), Clutch replacements are a bitch (triple plate RB clutches are not cheap either); Requires center plate to really deliver power effectively. TOtal cost after it is all said and done = roughly 7K

Option 2
Dog engagement Gearset (PPG), Pros: great shifts and capable of handling the power easily, fitment is not problem, cost effective for a dog mission. Cons: Has to be rebuilt at relatively short intervals (about 5k miles) and rebuild costs are extremely expensive; street drivability decreased, noisy. Cost after it all = roughly 10K to get it rolling

Option 3: O.S. Giken Sequential (OS88) Pros: nice box on the track, no missed shifts, good selection of gear ratio's. Cons: Not traffic friendly, rebuild required often but is not something you get to do in your garage, has fitment issues (need to use GTR Transfer case). Rough cost after it all = 14K

Option 4: Th400 or 4L80E Race prepped transmission with manual valve bodies, and proper stall converter. Pros: Strong, Easy to Repair, Cheap (you can find these things for a couple hundred bucks), driveable on the track and the street without too much compromise, cool options like paddle shift for the 4L80E are available. Cons: Not as fun as 5 or 6 speed, requires external cooling to last long, need numerous parts up front to adapt it. Total Cost up front = Approximately 3-5K based on what transmission is used.

Although Option 4 is the cheapest, I am not necessarily looking for the cheapest option. I am looking for your input and experiences to make a decision. I will NOT drift this car, it may see some highspeed stuff and some drag but other than that it will not see a circuit course.

SO let's discuss.

First off, This is a awesome project. =)

I've had experience with 3 of the 4 options you've mentioned above. Once my stock 3rd gear died on me I Ran the OS cross-mission in my GTR then eventually went to the OS88, and am running a PPG dog box in my S15.

I'd stay away from the OS cross-mission for your set-up. U need a dog mission or that auto.
If you want dog enguagement as u know the PPG is much nicer on the street. 88 is great for the track and under wot... Can't beat it IMO actually and the ratio options are a bit more friendly, espically w/ the big twins but, on the street not so much. Every stoplight, passin on the highway etc....clunk, clunk, clunk, down through each gear everytime. No skiping or quick jumps to N. You know what I mean. And your correct about the service being less expensive except on the intervals, and according to my records. I do overhauls once a year and from the looks of it could probably go quite a bit longer on the PPG after seeing how well things have been holding up.

Another thing that u hit on is fitment, w/ the GTR boxes.
FYI, Friend's racing in JP does their own custom version of a OS88 GTR box where they remove the transfer case and add a SR bell housing for their shop car's so they fit right in S-chassies. I'm sure they could do a version for u that keeps the RB bell housing.

Your car is going to be so hardcore anyway, Option 2-4 would all be fine. But after I read your post. The auto may be the way to go, given what your plans are for the car. Next I would say PPG, based on the fact u still want to street drive it and it's a bit less expensive. but the OS88 is pure sex..

ah tuff call.

Feel free to hit me up if you have any other Q's

suscribed =)

Just read the thread from front to back (1-1.5 hours ) and I have to say, this thread is awe-inspiring.

My Dad served in Okinawa. If my memory serves me right, he was 1st Marines, 1st Med Battalion, Motor T. Pencil pusher pretty much..

I can't really find much to say about the build that anyone else hasn't already said. Everything on the car has been given care and thought. It truly is an original work of art and like everyone else, I can't wait to see the finished product. BTW, I live in MS so if you ever have an itch to visit south MS in the finished product, I'd be your personal slave.

Thanks for the input most helpful post about gearbox options yet. Makes me want to go with the freshly rebuilt HKS (1st Gen Holinger Internals) Dog mission I have the chance to get for a ungodly low price.

Yeah but HKS/Holinger Rebuild is the most $$ of the bunch..

What about G-force 4-speed Dogbox???

Lost of guys are begining to run them here with great success. And super cheap to fix or switch ratio's

Peak Performance - Drivetrain

Something to consider..

I had actually considered Jericho and the G-Force GF5R, Then the HKS came up for sale at an awesome price with 0 miles on the rebuild, so I had to take it into consideration as well. Truth be told, I am going to have to sit back and chill a bit and just make sure I am making the best choice for now and the future when it comes to gearboxes and my choices.

I thought about a T-56 but didn't look tooo much into it after I realized I would have some cluth/flywheel issues to overcome that I just couldn't get face to face with someone about.

On a Side Note - This project is hereby benched. I am NOT bringing it back to the United States in the near future but will eventually do so. I have to focus on my transition from the military to the civilian sector. I have arranged for the car to be finished by a pretty respectable shop here in Okinawa that I have a good relationship with. Although, not ideal, I will not have the tools, facilities or the money to buy the tools that are needed to finish it when it does get back. So the new plan is this:

1. Shop will finish on a schedule we set up today
2. Car will be running by the end of the year
3. I will arrange for Kaizo to import it in the spring of next year.
4. I will beat the shit out of it next summer

All of this stems from the likelyhood that I will be in Iraq within 2 months and 12 more months of idle time plus more of my indecisiveness would equate to this thing never being finished.

I will post up some pictures when it is complete. Although this situation kind of sucks, it is better than abandoning it as a whole.

If I were you I would try to take care of it right now with you still in Japan,
I have seen too many times guys end up giving up on bringing the car once they are already in the US, because you are away from the car, and cant controll what is happenning with it. Unless you have a family member or someone that you absolutley trust that will do everything necessary on the Japan side.

By the way would Kaizo be doing the kit car thing? or full registration?
you can pm if you prefer.

I have a long time trusted friend to oversee everything. I am due to leave here in 5 weeks, so finishing it up that quick is not going to happen. Even if I did have the 20K up front to do so.

Kaizo does unibody kit car's here in Japan, that way they export as a kit car and are recognized by the U.S. Guy's have been pulled over by Ca CHP in Kaizo cars and subsequently left alone because how they do it, is legit. I know a few of the guys that went through them, and have seen some other cars over there that went through them, so it seems that it owuld be best for me to use something tried and proven. Once the car is there in the U.S. it will get registered and will be just fine. Either way I was going, it really didn't matter, S15's are not and will never be on any eligibility list for an RI import.

Recent car mag in the U.S. had a Kaizo S15 in it
There are a few R32 GTR's
and at least one R34 GTR that I know of

Thanks.

I used a C34 Front Crossmember. IF you research a little you will find the answers to your questions.

The bottom line is, a year in Baghdad or in training for another job I might be taking still equates to NOT working on this car and more delays. I want it to actually be finished, so um yeah, you called jack shit.

So who you got to finish up the car Brian? Funny how I've been on this island for 2 yrs and have not taken the liberty to see this thing in person...I think I figured that if I see the body/engine and see your OCD first hand, I'd probably drive car off Hedo Point or set it on fire...

good luck getting in LEGALY into the states... Kit car can only be 60% of the orginal car (motor swap dosen't count)and must still pass FEDERAL smog and crash testing even if importing. Many JDM car have been turned way at custom and some crushed when owner would not ship back to Japan....one hell of a nice car would hate to see it crushed...Please check everything out yourself, do not take there word that they can get the car in to the states.....

I'm still calling it.

Don't get me wrong, I WANT to see you finish it. I bet it's going to be AMAZING. (if it does get finished)

With how much time he himself has put into it, I don't see why it wouldn't get finished.

Brian, post new pictures of your hatch

Please go dsome research yourself as well. I have been corresponding with the EPA and DOT as well as a few companies on this one. I am pretty sure I can make it happen. I am not some poor kid fan boy with a big imagination. There are a few Kaizo S15's in the U.S. right now being driven as well as a few Kaizo GTR's. The shit is possible and done on a regular basis. Now find a majority that are willing to cough up the 10K plus to make it happen. Kaizo issues a Kit car unibody with U.S. VIN, how the fuck is that illegal? I know of a couple of guys that have been pulled over in Ca driving Kaizo Cars adn they were let go, do you know why? After Kaizo is done with the Chassis it is no longer a Nissan or whatever, it is a KAIZO. After 10 years here in Japan and all of that BS wannabe importers trying to take us for our cars and cash, you can bet that I have done some leg work and also, have a very trusted friend that has already gone this route successfully. Now if some guy from Fl. promises me a Fl. state title and some other BS, you can bet I will run like hell.

Anyways, This thread needs to go into hibernation for a while until I have something meaningful to post.

Hope you can do it , but I saw more the 10 cars take by custom in just one week and Cost owner $$$$ to send them back to Japan... Good luck Hope to see you on the road here Soon.....
