RB downpipe / downpipe rubbing

so i just replaced my old turbo with a gt28 from cxracing.
everything has been set for it finally got it on and works fine, problem is since the turbo is slightly shifted it forces the down pipe and steering column to rub against each other.

please any suggestions would be helpful

i found that if i raise the downpipe/piping it might clear, or maybe an extended elbow for the downpipe, idk

motor: rb20det
chassis: 1990 240sx base model

the photo you posted is of a cast downpipe.

perhaps you should contact the manufacturer and make them aware of this problem.

in the mean while, i would suggest buying an aftermarket elbow, and bashing it with a hammer to create the required clearance.

what exhaust manifold are you using?

yeah cast, my bad

i found that an aftermarket elbow with a flange will give me enough clearance, well i hope it does, wont know til the parts arrive, but ill keep this thread posted on what happens

im using the stock manifold

Was the cxracing turbo sold/advertised as a direct for replacement for your stock turbo? Or was it just a universal t28?

I've heard of people having this issue with tomei manifolds, but never with oem manifold.

its advertised as "bolt on fitment, fits stock manifold and downpipe" and its also advertised for "89-99 Nissan 240SX S13, S14, Silvia Chassis with RB20DET RB25DET Engine Swap"

with the last part i would expect the turbo to not give me problems with a 240sx but it did, oh well

even so the guys over at cxracing are legit, they'll hook it up when it comes to prices if you go in person but dont carry much for rb20 swaps, carry more for sr swaps

i also found that if i were to raise my motor slightly it would clear the problem, but not sure if it would create unnecessary vibrations and other problems

Raise it then. Better yet, grind where it rubs or notch it but cutting it, then welding it back up.

I had the same issue when I installed my specR t28, you have to buy the Megan elbow or Tomei. I'm not sure of any others that fit, but the single port elbows is what you need. the dual port ebay $50 one will NOT fit. I went with Megan and fix the problem.

Also might try reclocking the turbo just a hair.

Reclocking the turbo won't accomplish much, since you can't move the hotside when reclocking a turbo, it only attaches to the manifold one way.

well luckily mine was not rubbing against it hard, only glancing it but when turning the wheel it scrapped it bad,

it moved the elbow about 3cm, doesnt hit anymore, and even at its worse the elbow and the steering column only come close to about a cm

i was still able to connect my piping without making cuts, only had to pull my piping back a bit for the holes to ling up

ill post photos later tonight

are you having the same problem?

Well my goal is to have an RB in my convertible here pretty soon, and while I wait I am doing as much research as I can, and one thing that concerned me was the steering shaft clearance, however, you figured out an inexpensive yet effective way of solving it, THANK YOU! Which mounts are you using? and I am guessing you need two exhaust turbo gaskets?
